Homemade Granite and Butcher Block Cleaners

Last summer, I decided that I was spending WAY too much money at Target on cleaning supplies. I had recently gone paper towel free (more on that tomorrow!) and wanted to continue the momentum by cleaning in a cheaper, more natural way.

I have two main surface types in my kitchen: butcher block and granite. Honestly, the cabinets only get a good wipe-down every few weeks, so I wasn’t as worried about making a cleaner to work on those. Below are the recipes that I have been using for a couple of months now. They are extremely inexpensive and get my kitchen sparkling clean.

*Disclaimer: the sparkling clean only lasts until I open the door and the bloodhounds come back inside. Oh well, I know they appreciate a clean kitchen J

I found this on Pinterest and tweaked for my own devices.

Butcher Block Cleaner:

Peel two lemons. Put the peels into a mason jar (and save the lemon part for something else…obviously). Fill the mason jar with distilled white vinegar. Put the lid on tight and let it look pretty in your window for about 10 days. Pour the vinegar into a spray bottle and clean away! I also then just reuse those same lemon peels to make a second batch; it’s plenty potent!

Granite Cleaner:

In a spray bottle, combine one part rubbing alcohol with 4 parts water. Add about 4 drops of whatever dish soap you prefer. I have been using Dr. Bronner’s tea tree oil soap and it’s awesome. The alcohol gets the granite nice and sparkly. I use this spray for windows and stainless steel, too. Works for me!

Do you make any household cleaners? I’d love to hear what they are!
